local lib dems speak out on bedroom tax
0 B documentA new policy on housing benefit to make it work for tenants in social housing will be debated by the Lib Dems' national conference in Glasgow on Monday 16th September.
The new policy, developed by North East Lib Dems, aims to respond fairly and practically to tenants' needs and work with the housing stock available.
Conference representative for Stockton Liberal Democrats, former Councillor Suzanne Fletcher said
"It's really important that we have enough social housing and the right housing benefit system for people who need help with paying their rent. The current rules present people in Stockton and North East with real difficulties. People's needs must be taken into account and they must be treated fairly, while working with the reality of the local social housing we actually have."
The proposed policy calls for the Government to work with those representing vulnerable groups such as the disabled, elderly and children in drawing up housing needs guidelines. The motion also calls for a review of the Discretionary Housing Payment Fund, a proper assessment of the future demand of what type of social housing is needed, and the planning of the right homes in the right place. -
