Candidate for President of the Liberal Democrats, Lembit Öpik MP, will be visiting the North East today to help local Lib Dems in Stockton campaign against the Government's ID card policy.

Lembit will also take centre stage at the Liberal Democrat annual constituency dinner on Thursday evening where he will be guest speaker.

Commenting yesterday, ahead of the visit Lembit said, "I'm delighted to be visiting Stockton. As someone who consolidated their political career as a North East councillor more than ten years ago, it is always a pleasure to go back to the region where it all began.

"I'm pleased to be able to speak on the Government's controversial ID Card plan, which the Liberal Democrats have campaigned against tirelessly in parliament. It is also important to take the debate outside of Westminster to the people, so I look forward to what I'm sure will be an exciting and energetic debate in Stockton tomorrow."
