- One rule for big business ?
Councillors Suzanne Fletcher and Julia Cherrett, Liberal Democrat Councillors for the Bishopsgarth and Elm Tree ward, are furious at developers snubbing the Council. There are a number of breaches on planning rules around, but one that everyone can see is the unauthorised boards advertising new houses. Taylor Woodrow have had these boards on Darlington Back Lane for over 6 months now, and are ignoring all requests from the Council to remove them. There are also boards on Harrowgate Lane near to the Mitre for other developers that have not been there as long. Suzanne says " It is ridiculous that the Council is having to spend time on this when there are other, bigger, problems to deal with. Developers should not be cocking a snook at the Council like this, but taking note and taking action. Householders and small businesses have to do as asked, why should big business get away with it". - MILE HOUSE TRAFFIC IMPROVEMENT DIVERSIONS
MILE HOUSE JUNCTION IMPROVEMENTS Work will begin on these long awaited improvements at this junction on 25th June 2007, and will take around 12 weeks to complete. Whilst the work is being carried out it will mean that there will be a number of temporary closures of roads. The only closure in the Bishopsgarth and Elm Tree Ward will be on what is called the "west leg" which is the Bells Store side of the traffic lights near to the entrance to Newham Grange Park. These are expected to be on one or two Sundays towards the end of the works. However there will be a number of diversions for traffic, particularly traffic coming north from the roundabout on the ring road up Durham Road towards the Mile House. The details are quite complicated and we have put them onto our website at http://stocktonlibdems.org.uk/resources/index/ These are the original documents from the Council's Transportation section. Please contact them or ourselves if you need any further information. - beware bogus charity bag collectors
We have heard that charity bags left out for the Air Ambulance Charity left out in Bishopsgarth yesterday, were collected by an unmarked white van before the charity van arrived to collect. Please do be aware of this, and if you see an unmarked van doing this note the details of the vehicle and report to the police as soon as possible. Liberal Democrat MP Jo Swinson has recently raised this issue in parliament - you can read more at www.joswinson.org.uk/news/000446.html Published and promoted by DR Rigg on behalf of Stockton Liberal Democrats, 4 Monmouth Drive, Eaglescliffe, Stockton-on-Tees, TS16 9HU. - 25 Years of Excellent Service
Today Suzanne Fletcher celebrates the 25th anniversary of her election to Stockton Council. On November 12th 1981 she drove a thin orange wedge into the red/blue comfort zone of Stockton Town Hall, winning the Elm Tree ward by-election. The campaign was hard, but had support from all over the region. Suzanne, who was originally only going to be the agent, became the candidate at the last moment. Suzanne celebrates with colleagues from round the region At a celebration party last night, attended by friends and colleagues from across the north east including Fiona Hall MEP, she recalled the early days of Focus production and distribution. Letraset, hand turned duplicators and willing volunteers all featured. Over the 25 years Suzanne has been part of a group of Liberals then Liberal Democrats on the Council ranging in size from 1 to 11 with all the associated joys and sorrows. She has been the first councillor to put out a regular leaflet, the first to run ward surgeries specifically for young people in the ward, a pioneer of e-updates to her constituents and an ardent advocate of having a good, active website. She now shares an enlarged ward with Julia Roberts and together they continue to serve the residents who have elected them. - Oct 20, 2006:
- Campaign on speeding success
We have long campaigned for an end of speeding fines not being able to be spent on local traffic calming and road safety education schemes. There is now a move to make it easier for this money to be spent locally on what is needed. There are also now a number of signs on main roads telling motorists they are speeding - a much better approach to try to change behaviour. - May 5, 2005:
- Bishopsgarth Residents Meeting
There has been a meeting of some residents in the Bishopsgarth area about setting up a residents association to look at local issues such as speeding in the Marske Lane area, and antisocial behaviour. The next meeting to set up a group is on Monday June 27th 2005 at 6.30 p.m. in the 5 Alls. All are welcome. - May 3, 2005:
- Speed Traps
The speed limit on the Ring Road, from Sainsbury's to Hartburn Lane / Darlington Road junction has been dropped from 40 to 30 m.p.h for about 9 months now, but many motorists (97%!) have not noticed and are being caught on camera. Suzanne had asked for extra signs but the Government will not allow it. The speed limit on the other part of the Ring Road from Sainsbury's to Norton Church roundabout will be dropping to 30 m.p.h. soon, so do watch out for this. Julia is now asking for better ways of advertising this, and for signs which alert drivers to their speed (as in Darlington) to be used.
