Good News for Stockton Borough's Academies

August 8, 2010 10:54 PM

Liberal Democrats on Stockton Council have welcomed the news from the Government that they will provide money for new buildings for two academies already planned - for North Shore Health Academy in Stockton and Thornaby Academy.

The Government will notify the capital allocation after its Autumn spending review and meanwhile will be working with all involved in such projects all over England to reduce the costs.

Councillor Suzanne Fletcher, chair of the Stockton Liberal Democrats Council Group, commented:

"I'm glad for the pupils and teachers that there is again the hope of new buildings in the foreseeable future. I don't like the idea of academies, but the Labour Government forced the Council to plan them, as part of the complex rules for Building Schools for the Future (BSF). Indeed, these two academies will open in September, but in the buildings of two of the three schools they replaced.

"We shall continue to work for all schools in this Borough to have the decent buildings they need."
